Yukon Arctic Ultra 2004

There are still a few hours to go before the course of Yukon Arctic Ultra 2004 officially closes. Seven of the foot competitors have now finished the 300 mile course, Luke having finished at around 2.15 am on Sunday morning. We caught up with Achim Heukemes taking a rest in the High Country Inn in Whitehorse. He placed fourth in the end.

The outright winner of the 300 mile mountain bike race was Rocky Riefenstuhl, who arrived on Wednesday 18th at 6.30pm, (he took 4 days and 6 hours to complete the 300 miles). He was the only person to finish the course on a bike. Similarly Laszlo Kovacs was the only person to finish on skis, though he spent as much time walking as skiing apparently because of the conditions on the trail.

But for all of these excellent times, the real competition has been in the 300 mile footrace. There were about 20 starters, of whom around 10 have or will finish the race. The winner was Andrew Barnett, who completed the course in an excellent 6 days and 2 hours (arriving at 2.15pm on Friday 20th). This was a full 24 hours faster than the winner last year, so it was really good effort.

He was followed by Shelley Gellately and Juan Carlos Sagastume, who came in together around 14 hours behind him, at 3.45 am on Saturday morning (in 6 days and 16 hours). The were followed by Achim, who finished around 1.30pm on the Saturday, after a shade more than a week on the course. A few hours behind him were Steve Bowron and Wilco the Dutchman, and they were followed by Luke, star-struck by a superb show of the Northern Lights, in the middle of the night on Saturday into Sunday. Achim, from Germany, said that he could never have imagined that it could be so tough.

‘Echt brutal – really brutal’, he said. ‘And then in the final stages it got even tougher, when there was new snow so we were having to break trail.’

But he loved the moments when he was alone out on the course.

‘It’s not like being with all the tourists on the Marathon des Sables. Here you are completely, alone depending on only yourself, for thirty miles at a time, in the middle of nowhere. It was fantastic.’
